Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958

Protects centrally protected monuments and regulates construction in the areas around them.

Act28 Aug 1958

Why it matters. Construction near a centrally protected monument can be prohibited or regulated within defined distances, and may need permission from the competent authority. A site search should check whether any protected monument lies nearby.

Practical point. The Act was significantly amended in 2010 (the India Code copy is titled with the 2010 amendment and validation). Heritage bye-laws are being framed for individual monuments; check for the specific monument.
